Focused Movement
Strengthen Strategic Mindset through Reflection
Leadership development is often discussed in terms of formal education, executive coaching, or experiential opportunities inside the workplace. Yet one of the most powerful tools for becoming a better leader is far simpler: deliberate physical movement paired with uninterrupted time to think. Rucking, the practice of walking with a loaded pack, creates exactly that environment. It forces the body into steady exertion while freeing the mind to work, making it uniquely suited for cultivating clarity, discipline, resilience, and strategic focus.
I have enjoyed rucking more than any other military activity for its simplicity and athletic requirements. Over the years, I’ve memorized knowledge while rucking, studied for tests, mentally dealt with issues that I just couldn’t process without the trials and challenges of a heavy pack on my back, and so much more. But it’s been about six months since I threw my old framed Alice Pack on my back and started moving under load. Today, that changed. As I begin rucking again, I am reminded of how profoundly this simple, ancient practice sharpens my skills as a leader.
